$12,535.70 Invoice: The Cost of Unethical Water Damage Practices
On June 19th, a small nail shop experienced a water flood issue and called a plumbing company to investigate. The plumber recommended that the shop call a restoration company to fix the issue and they then called a company called " We are going to call it La la land". Up until then, the shop had never experienced water damage, so they were desperate and followed the plumber’s instructions.
The La la land employee arrived less than 30 minutes after they were called and immediately began working. After about 20 minutes, she asked the shop owner to sign something on her iPad and explained that the insurance would cover the payment.
Impressed with her work ethic, the shop owner signed without hesitation. The work took about 2-3 hours for the La la land employee to rip out the shop’s floor and 3 other workers came to help finish the job in about 5-6 hours. They covered an area of approximately 575sqft and left 4 dehumidifiers and dryers with the shop owner, saying that they would come back and pick them up the next day. It turns out that the insurance company denied the claim and the La la land company sent the shop owner an invoice for $12,535.70 and demanded payment.
The La la land company had never discussed nor explained the cost of the payment, the invoice omits the description of the work that was completed, and the shop owner had no idea where the money was coming from. The La la land company continued to push for payment, saying that they would take legal action if they did not receive it.
The shop owner later realized that the plumber had received a kickback from La la land for calling them out, something close to $2000. This unethical practice should never be promoted and everyone should be aware of these kinds of businesses. It’s important for business owners to be informed and aware of any water damage practices that may be occurring in their area.
